Alok has 21 million monthly listeners and 27 million Instagram followers – but back in the day, you could find him behind the bar at The Prince of Wales in Brixton. Before the fresh-faced Brazilian megastar skyrocketed to fame with single “Here Me Now” in 2016, he spent time trying to break into the scene in England’s capital, dropping his CV at clubs around the city to little avail. He eventually moved back to Brazil, quickly rising to the ranks of the country’s top musicians and racking up global DJ acclaim. Alok’s tracks are addictively danceable. His master mixing skills span EDM, house, and pop, and he’s lent his remix talents to heavy hitters from Mick Jagger to Jason Derulo.

This year, after landing the #4 spot on DJ Mag’s global Top 100 list, Alok made a triumphant return to England’s capital to perform a sold-out show at the Ministry of Sound. He’s currently working on producing an album in collaboration with Brazilian indigenous peoples. GQ caught up with him while he was on set filming the music video for his latest track “Deep Down,” a high-energy bop for high summer.
