David Hockney to launch immersive art show in London.
Known for his iconic work, like Portrait of an Artist, a modern take on the Greek myth of Narcissus, the celebrated British artist will showcase some of his iconic paintings, as well as some rarely seen pieces and new works in a show that embraces Hockney’s love of media and the possibilities it brings to his work.
Opening from January 25, 2023, Bigger & Closer sees Hockney join the immersive, digital art show trend that has seen works by the likes of Van Gogh, Klimt and Frida Kahlo presented in a fresh, new way. The 50 minute show is the result of three years’ close collaboration between David Hockney, London Theatre Company and 59 Productions – the team behind Lightroom.
Works are presented in six themed chapters and take the audience through LA, Yorkshire and Normandy, with a score composed by Nico Muhly.
Unlike other retrospectives and exhibitions, Hockney will play an active role in forming the show’s themes and narratives.
Hockney reveals his process to the audience through commentary spoken by himself, so the audience can watch him experiment with perspective and format as he speaks. His life-long fascination with the possibilities of new media is given vibrant expression in a show that invites visitors to see the world through his eyes.
Lightroom is an extraordinary four-storey-high space in Kings Cross equipped with the latest digital projection and audio technology.
