Barcelona’s D·Origen Coffee Shop introduces 3D-printed elements made from coffee grounds and waste
We are big fans of both great design and great coffee so its no suprise that D·Origen Coffee Shop’s innnovation and attitute to sustainbility has caught our eye.
Located within Barcelona’s historic Casa Calvet (and one of one of Antoni Gaudí’s earliest buildings) the contemportay coffee spot can lay claim to be the world’s first that incorporates 3D-printed elements made from coffee grounds. This innovative space, designed by Gianluca Pugliese of LOWPOLY, uses the pioneering LOWIMPACT® material, a blend of recycled PLA and coffee grounds, exemplifiing the sustainable reuse of high volume coffee waste.
The biodegradable, petroleum-free material contains 98% organic content from coffee grounds. The use of recycled coffee grounds addresses significant environmental issues, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional materials.
The Cafe and shop features custom created furniture across its counters, lamps, and stools that inspired by the fluidity of coffee blend seamlessly with the historic architecture. As striking centre peices; the backlit counters showcase unique amber textures often associated with well-poured caffiene.
Advanced 3D printing techniques with large-format printers and modified Rev3rd extruders plus industrial robotic arms ensured precision in crafting the bespoke pieces including the above stools.
