Team behind Kinfolk launch Kindling magazine exploring the fresh perspectives that come with having children

A new sister offering to Kinfolk, the new magazine is aimed at “people with children” and takes a very different approach to the sleek, refined and astute offering its design, from in particular design director Alex Hunting and art director Staffan Sundström has delivered so successfully.
Issue one, The Emotions Issue, was released in June 2021 with its follow up, The Body Issue, landing this week. Both editions puts show a new playful side to Kinfolk, pushing the magazines global tone of voice in a new direction while still retaining much of the loved Kinfolk character through tasteful design and intriguing editorial content.
Kindling’s design is visually stimulating with much of its art direction and illustration drawing influence from education, children’s activity books and scientific journals. Both issues feature hand-drawn cover illustrations by Norwegian illustrator Espen Friberg and naturally see’s the magazines content accompanied by a graphic language comprised of geometric shapes, which help tell stories in a simple and immediate way. In the same way that the illustrations feel very analogue, as does the photography; free from overly stylised shoots – the images all fit into a low-key, homely reportage style.
A more expressive and naive side to Kinfolk’s personality.
Kindling is packed with interviews, features and fun activities, from forest schools to pillow forts; exploring the new ideas and fresh perspectives that come with raising a child.
