“It has to be spontaneous, otherwise it doesn’t work in my head. I never know what I want to express prior to getting to a place and being with a particular crowd.”

Kaifeng-born, Vancouver-based Yu Su is a producer, musician, and DJ known for her ambient, dub-inflected electronic sound that merges the natural with the synthetic. Through her bié Records, a Beijing label co-founded with former members of Vice China, Yu Su has released a debut album—the personal Yellow River Blue—while also creating a platform to showcase some of China’s experimental artists, connecting audiences from different parts of the world.

Yu Su answers questions about her careers, what influences her, the importance of creating a vibe, and more.

“I think to me style and fashion is more spontaneous. I don’t particularly use styles and materials to express myself. It’s garments on top of other things. If I feel in a particular mood going to perform in a club or a festival, I would maybe choose something that I don’t usually wear because there’s so many different sides of me. I mainly write music, and when I write music, I just wear my pajamas at home. I wear a lot of linen at home. There is nothing fun and fancy at home.”
